Bora Bora vs. Domingo

One question that our customers often ask is what’s the difference between the Bora Bora and Domingo products?

As far as appearance from the outside and durability or impermeability, there is absolutely no difference. The products look the same, are made from the same material, and they share all the same physical characteristics. Same waterproofness, same wind resistance, same durability, etc.

The difference lies solely in the type of installation they are designed for. The Bora Bora product includes a plastic ruler that acts as a support between risers on an open structure. This allows the product to span 60 cms between supports (risers) and provides a folded leaf appearance from underneath.

On the other hand, the Domingo product was designed to be installed on top of an existing substrate, like wood, plycem, zinc, etc. This product has no built-in support and must therefore be supported entirely by the roof surface. We can and often do use wood strips of 1″x2″ to act as the support in the case of an opened structure with risers that are more than 60cms apart. Some people actually prefer this look (see on the right in the picture below).

Here is a picture that shows the difference from underneath. On the left is Bora Bora, on the right is Domingo mounted on strappings of 1″x2″ of teak.

The cost of Bora Bora is about $10/m2 more than that of Domingo, but given the need for support or a substrate for the Domingo, the end-cost is about the same. Therefore if you need an exposed look from underneath, budget should not be a consideration in your choice.

Bora Bora requires specialised installation techniques and cannot be installed by the customer. Domingo can be installed by the customer after some minimal training, although we always recommend a professional installation to ensure leak-free roof that will last 25+ years.
